In Sunny Beach, payment is generally easy and tourist-friendly - but it’s smart to use a mix of card + cash. Here’s what to expect:

 

Currency used

  • Until the end of 2025 the official currency in Bulgaria was the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). It was fixed to the euro at about 1 EUR ≈ 1.955 BGN for 27 years.

  • On the 1st of Jan 2026, Bulgaria finally adopted the EUR. Until August 8, 2026, merchants are required to display the price of goods and services in both currencies to ensure transparency in the transition to the eurozone. So don't be surprised if you still see prices in both currencies.

  • Currently, by law, all payments are made in EUR.

  • Some tourist places in and around Sunny Beach, may also accept USD or GBP. Ask for the exchange rate before shopping.

 

💳 Card payments (very common)

  • Most places accept credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.):

    • hotels - inside your complex (room charges, bar, reception, etc.), you'll almost certainly be fine using your card

    • restaurants

    • bars & clubs

    • supermarkets and shops

  • Contactless payments (Apple Pay / Google Pay / Revolut Pay) are widely supported in tourist areas.

 

💵 Cash (still necessary)

Even though cards are widely accepted, you should carry some cash for:

  • taxis

  • small shops / street vendors

  • beach services

  • tips

👉 Recommendation:

  • Keep around 50–100 EUR for daily small expenses.

 

🏧 ATMs & withdrawing money

  • ATMs are widely available across Sunny Beach.

  • Best option:

    • Use bank ATMs (not random standalone machines)

    • Withdraw directly in EUR for the best exchange rate

⚠️ Avoid:

  • Independent ATMs with high fees. You can often spot them on the streets of Sunny Beach, Nessebar and Vlas, usually yellow-navy blue coloured

  • Letting the ATM convert currency for you (choose local currency).

 

💱 Exchange tips

  • Exchange money at:

    • BANKS - а reliable and hassle-free way to exchange or withdraw money.

Bulgaria has many commercial banks such as UniCredit Bulbank, DSK Bank, and First Investment Bank, but only a few maintain full branches in Sunny Beach, since it’s a seasonal resort rather than a large city.

Bank branches you can find in Sunny Beach: UniCredit Bulbank, Fibank (First Investment Bank), Central Cooperative Bank.

Other banking presence (ATMs / limited service points) - these are not full branches but still useful: 

International Asset Bank (ATM/service point), DSK Bank ATM, Multiple ATMs from UniCredit Bulbank ATM and Fibank ATM

    • official exchange offices – reliable and widely spread in and around Sunny Beach are the Crown Change offices. 

    • hotel desks - in the lobbies of many hotels you can find exchange offices, whose exchange rates are quite reasonable.

⚠️ Never:

  • Exchange money with individuals on the street (common scam)!!!

 

💡 Practical advice

✔️ Best combo: card + some amount of cash

✔️ Withdraw cash locally instead of exchanging large amounts beforehand

✔️ Always check the exchange rate before agreeing

✔️ Keep small notes/coins for convenience



Bottom line is: You don’t need to rely heavily on cash, but don’t go cashless either. Sunny Beach is modern enough for cards, but still cash-friendly in many situations.
